Why is freezing point depression more important than boiling point elevation?
By comparing Kb and Kf values in Table 13.6.1, we see that changes in the boiling point are smaller than changes in the freezing point for a given solvent. Boiling point elevations are thus more difficult to measure precisely. For this reason, freezing point depression is more commonly used to determine molar mass than is boiling point elevation.
How do you find the freezing point depression of a solution?
The freezing point depression, ∆Tf, of the solution is found by calculating the difference between the freezing temperature of the solution and the freezing temperature of the pure solvent found in part 1. The molality of the solution, m , is calculated from the known masses of solute and solvent and kf may be found according to kf = ∆Tf/ m
