What is the Paris Agreement on climate change and the sustainable development goals?
The historic Paris Agreement provides an opportunity for countries to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
As of February 2023, 195 members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are parties to the agreement.
Of the three UNFCCC member states which have not ratified the agreement, the only major emitter is Iran.
The United States withdrew from the agreement in 2020, but rejoined in 2021.
