cold isostatic pressing wikipedia
What is cold isostatic pressing (CIP)?
The cold isostatic pressing (CIP) is a convenient tool to yield the powder compact of advanced materials including ceramics. For near-net shaping and quality control of these materials, a preform configuration of powder compact as well as density distribution and porosity structure must be investigated before sintering and subsequent processings.
What is isostatic pressing?
Isostatic pressing, also known as cold isostatic pressing and isopressing, entails compacting a dry or semi-dry powder in an elastomeric mold submersed in a pressurized liquid (Reed 1995, pp. 418–49). Often rigid tooling (e.g., a steel mandrel) is used in combination with the flexible elastomeric mold to help shape the powder.
Who invented cold isostatic pressing?
It was invented by Harry D. Madden in 1913. In cold isostatic pressing, as the same pressure is transmitted to each direction through the liquid medium and is passed to the powder equally through the elastic mold, the powder is subjected to equal pressure, thus achieving high uniformity of density.
What is a wet bag cold isostatic press?
In wet bag cold isostatic pressing, the powder is filled in a mold bag immersed in a liquid medium, where pressure is applied by a high-pressure pump to achieve forming. When the pressing is completed, the mold bag and billets are taken out (Fig. 1 ).
