What to do when power flickers?
Briefly shutting off power and isolating the problem area helps prevent damage to the electric system, which could result in a longer outage and affect many more customers.
For example, a flicker on your local power line could affect electric service for you and 200 of your neighbors. The powerline that serves your home probably experienced a blink or brief power interruption.
There are basically two reasons why these blinks occur.
A blink can occur because of a fault (short circuit) on the powerline, or the operation of a protective device working in reaction to a fault.
Why did the lights flicker NYC?
Matthew Ketschke, the president of the utility, told reporters early Friday that a protective system was activated to isolate that piece of failed equipment, leading to a brief voltage dip that caused the lights across the city to flicker for about a second.
Why does electricity flicker?
Flickering lights is a complete, momentary power outage, sometimes just for a second or two.
Your lights may also flicker a few times before you lose power entirely.
Generally, flickering lights occur when there is a fault in our electrical system, such as a tree or branch contacting a power line.
