HOUSTON (AP) — The challenges facing Houston's next mayor are familiar to many big cities: crime, crumbling infrastructure, budget shortfalls and a lack of affordable housing.

According to a recent report released by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) entitled The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes, Texas ranks the sixth-worst state in the U.S. for affordable housing for extremely low-income renters, with Houston ranking the fifth worst metropolitan city in the country.
How many people are experiencing homelessness in the Houston area? Information from the 2023 Homeless Count & Survey indicates that, at any single moment in time, we could expect to find 3,270 people experiencing literal homelessness in Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery County.
