What is a core literacy block?
The core literacy block includes systematic writing instruction with active practice every day in grades preK–3. A core literacy block in grades preK–3 should allocate time for the three main components: Foundational Skills, Engaging with Complex Text, and Writing. Oral language, a bedrock of literacy, develops throughout all three components.
What are the most productive literacy block schedules?
The most productive literacy block schedules include various reading and writing activities and instruction to help build foundational skills.
How long is a reading block?
An initial lesson from the Comprehensive Core Reading Program is usually 30-40 minutes each day of the required 90 minute uninterrupted reading block. For the remainder of the block, the teacher should differentiate instruction focusing on the need of students using the Comprehensive Core Reading Program or Supplemental Reading Program.
Does Science & Social Studies have a literacy block?
Science and social studies has dedicated instruction in that 20 minute block, but I really like to address the concepts during the literacy block, too. So we might be reading books and writing about those topics throughout the day, even if just that certain block is dedicated to it.
