  • What is the difference between isotonic and hypotonic solution?

Isotonic solution. The prefix, iso, refers to things that are the same. It has the same concentration of solute, and so you have no net inflow. Hypotonic solution, you have water molecules going into the cell, the cell expanding, kind of like a filling balloon. Isotonic solution, no net flow.

  • What happens in a hypertonic solution?

What happens in a hypertonic solution is osmosis. Water moves from where there is a lower concentration of solute to where there is a higher concentration of solute. Thus, in a hypertonic solution, water leaves the cell and moves to the environment. This causes the cell to shrivel.

  • What happens if a membrane is isotonic or hypertonic?

If the solutions on either side of the membrane are isotonic, water moves freely back and forth. Water moves from the hypotonic (less concentrated) side of a membrane to the hypertonic (less concentrated) side. The direction of the flow continues until the solutions are isotonic.
