hypotonic and isotonic solution
What is a hypotonic solution?
A hypotonic solution has a lower solute concentration than inside the cell (the prefix is Latin for or ). The difference in concentration between the compartments causes water to enter the cell. Plant cells can tolerate this situation better than animal cells.
How does hypertonic solution affect homeostasis?
Hypertonic solutions cause fluids to move out from inside of the cell to create homeostasis; this will cause the solutes to be normalized inside and outside the cell. As the exact opposite of hypotonic solutions, hypertonic solutions cause the cell to shrink from the inside.
What is an isotonic solution?
An isotonic solution has the same or very similar concentration of solute as another solution, meaning the water flow will reach equilibrium. Hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic are three words that are commonly used in science. Specifically, they are used to explain how water will flow between two different chemical solutions.
Why do cells react differently in hypotonic and Isotonic solutions?
Cells react differently in hypotonic, isotonic, and hypertonic solutions. In a hypotonic solution, water rushes into the cell causing it to expand or even burst. In an isotonic solution, there is no net flow of water, keeping the cell stable. In a hypertonic solution, water leaves the cell, causing it to shrivel.
