Is child labour harmful to children's health and development?
However, not all work performed by children is harmful to their health and development. The first task is therefore to distinguish child labour – which entails harmful forms of work – from other forms of children's involvement with work that are acceptable and have an educational component.
What is the sectoral composition of child labour?
The sectoral composition of child labour differs considerably across regions, although agriculture accounts for the largest share everywhere. In sub-Saharan Africa, agriculture plays the most important role, accounting for over four of every five children in child labour.
What is the difference between child labour and light work?
Child labour: Refers to work that deprives children of their childhood, potential and dignity, and that is harmful to their physical and/or mental development. Light work: Children aged 13-15 (12-14 in some developing countries), can do ‘light work’ with adult supervision, to earn pocket money outside school hours or during school holidays.
What is child labour?
Child labour comprises work that children are too young to perform and/or work that, by its nature or circumstances, is likely to harm children’s health, safety or morals.
