meiosis definition
How does a cell enter meiosis?
Before entering meiosis I, a cell must first go through interphase. As in mitosis, the cell grows during G 1 phase, copies all of its chromosomes during S phase, and prepares for division during G 2 phase. During prophase I, differences from mitosis begin to appear.
What happens when a cell is divided in meiosis 2?
The first division produces a daughter cell, and a much smaller polar body which may or may not undergo a second division. In meiosis II, division of the daughter cell produces a second polar body, and a single haploid cell, which enlarges to become an ovum.
What is haploid meiosis?
What is meiosis? Meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information. During meiosis one cell divides twice to form four daughter cells. These four daughter cells only have half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell – they are haploid.
What is meiosis in biology?
The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica This article was most recently revised and updated by Melissa Petruzzello. Meiosis, division of a germ cell involving two fissions of the nucleus and giving rise to four gametes, or sex cells, each with half the number of chromosomes of the original cell.
