What is artificial seed encapsulation?
In this article we will discuss about the meaning and methods of artificial seed. Somatic embryos are not enclosed by seed coats and due to microbial contamination and desiccation they are not able to survive if these are sown directly into field soil. The aim of somatic embryos encapsulation is to produce an analog to true seeds.
Can artificial seeds be used for plant propagation?
In nature, seeds are typically the primary method of plant propagation. Some plants can be vegetatively propagated but conventional methods are time consuming, expensive and cannot produce plants at larger scale. Synthetic seed technology could play a significant role in the production of artificial seeds, or Syn-seeds.
How are artificial seeds made?
(iv) Using fluid drilling method. Radenbergh et. al. (1986) developed hydrated artificial seeds by mixing somatic embryos with sodium-alginate, followed by dropping into a solution of CaCl 2 to form calcium-alginate beads. About 30-55% embryo had the germination capacity producing seedlings.
What are synthetic seeds?
Synseeds or artificial seeds are alginate encapsulated somatic embryos, vegetative buds, or any other micropropagules that can be used as seeds and germinated into plantlets after propagating under in vitro or in vivo conditions and that can also sustain the regeneration potential after low temperature storage.
