In August 2018, the New York Public Service Commission approved a petition by Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) for a $5 million, three-year natural gas demand response pilot program, one of the first demand response projects for natural gas.
Does Con Edison have pipeline transport contracts?
Con Edison has firm pipeline transport contracts that enabled the company to meet 83% of its peak-day demand in the winter of 2017–2018. Firm contracts provide Con Edison with an agreed-upon supply of natural gas that cannot be curtailed except under unforeseeable circumstances.
What is a demand response program?
Demand response (DR) programs help manage utility usage during periods of peak demand. These programs have become fairly common in the electricity sector during the past 10 to 15 years. For the electric power sector in the United States, peak electricity demand occurs in the summer, when warm weather increases the demand for air conditioning.

Program Overview

In 2013, DCAS launched the City's Demand Response (DR) Program to provide city agencies with the ability to earn revenue by reducing their energy usage during periods of peak usage. As part of the energy industry’s increasing use of pricing incentives to add flexibility to energy delivery systems, the revenue from the DR Program is paid by utility

Outcomes

From 2013-2021, City agencies earned total program revenues of more than $100 million. In Summer 2021, 517 facilities across 31 agencies and organizations committed to reduce more than 103 MW of load during peak demand periods. How to Participate

DCAS works with partner agency staff third-party vendor NuEnergen to identify City buildings that are suitable for DR. The facilities must have curtailable load and real-time meters with communication capabilities.
