Conflict criminology derives its name from the fact that theorists within the area believe that there is no consensual social contract between state and citizen. Conflict theory assumes that every society is subjected to a process of continuous change and that this process creates social conflicts.
Who contributed to the conflict theory of Criminology?
Two prominent contributors to the conflict theory of criminology were Karl Marx and C. Wright Mills. Marx laid the groundwork for this theory that subsequent philosophers would later expand on.
What is conflict theory?
Conflict theory looks to social and economic factors as the causes of crime and deviance. Unlike functionalists, conflict theorists don’t see these factors as positive functions of society. They see them as evidence of inequality in the system.
