Quelle est l'histoire de Ellis Island ?
Ellis Island s'appelle "Fort Gibson", c'est une place militaire qui fait partie du système de défense de la ville contre la flotte britannique.
L'île apparaît alors comme une meilleure solution, permettant d'isoler les migrants avant leur acceptation aux États-Unis et d'éviter les évasions.Pourquoi les immigrants vont à Ellis Island ?
Ces dernières venaient du monde entier : d'Europe souvent (Irlande, Allemagne, France, Italie…), du Maghreb et d'Asie.
La plupart fuyaient la guerre, la famine, ou souhaitaient simplement trouver un emploi pour subvenir aux besoins de leur famille, dans l'espoir d'une vie meilleure.Quel est le but de Ellis Island ?
Cette île servait de lieu de quarantaine médicale pour les immigrés voulant débarquer à New York.
Sur cette île se trouve l'Ellis Island Immigration Museum qui retrace l'histoire de l'immigration aux États-Unis.
L'île est accessible par ferry depuis la pointe de Manhattan.- La visite d'Ellis Island et du musée national de l'Immigration est comprise dans la visite de la Statue de la Liberté.
En effet, le seul accès à l'île est en ferry.
Depuis Battery Park au sud de Manhattan, le ferry passe d'abord à Liberty Island puis fait un arrêt à Ellis Island.

Aftermath
Due to the economic depression at the time, immigration was light and Ellis Island inspectors had no difficulty in processing the fewer than 20,000 immigrants who arrived annually. On June 15, 1897 a fire destroyed the complex of wooden buildings. Although 140 immigrants and numerous employees were on the island, no one was killed.
