copper processing
What processes form copper?
Copper is a metal that has been deposited from hot sulphur solutions, created in volcanic regions.
The hot solutions concentrated the copper up to a thousand times more than would normally be found in rocks.
The resultant enriched rocks are called copper ores. What are the steps to processing copper?
Sulfide ores undergo a five-step process: 1) the ore is crushed into a fine sand to loosen the copper minerals; 2) it is froth floated, where the sand is mixed with water and chemicals to make the copper particles water repellent; 3) air is passed through the mixture, allowing the copper minerals to attach to bubbles
How is copper produces?
The traditional method used at most mines involves the ore being broken and brought to the surface for crushing.
The ore is then ground finely before the copper-bearing sulfide minerals are concentrated by a flotation process which separates the grains of ore mineral from the waste material, or gangue.By-products generated in the process are sulfur dioxide and slag.
The sulfur dioxide is captured and converted to sulfuric acid and either sold on the open market or used in copper leaching processes.
