What is the Solas requirement for emergency towing arrangement?
SOLAS 1974 Chapter 2, regulation 3.4 requires all tankers of 20,000 tonnes deadweight and above, including oil, chemical and gas tankers, to be provided with an emergency towing arrangement at both ends of the ship.
This requirement has been in force since 1st January 1996 for new vessels built after that date.Unlike tugs, which utilise a weight transfer system to generate traction, an electric tow ultimately uses its own weight to gain traction and get loads moving.
What is the difference between a tug and a barge?
Barges, on which cargoes are shipped, are usually non self-propelled and therefore dependent on a tug for propulsion; where the tug is the prime mover for the barge, connected to the barge using a towline.
Distance between both can reach 200 metres and more.
How does a tug tow a barge?
Once a single tugboat or multiple tugboats have moved a barge or vessel into port, they can either tow using a tow line or push it into dock.
If a tow line is needed, this can be done with either direct or indirect towing.
With direct towing, the tugboat pulls the large vessel straight ahead.
