extreme poverty

  • What is extreme poverty?

Today, less than 10 percent of the world population lives in extreme poverty. Based on information about basic needs collected from 15 low-income countries, the World Bank defines the extreme poor as those living on less than $1.90 a day.
  • What are the types of extreme poverty?

    Absolute poverty

Primary poverty: This is when people cannot afford basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing.Secondary poverty: This refers to a situation where people can afford the basic needs of life, but they choose to spend their income on non-essentials.
  • What are the characteristics of extreme poverty?

The United Nations Guiding Principles on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights define extreme poverty as being characterised by social exclusion and by an accumulation of insecurities in many areas of life: a lack of identity papers, unsafe housing, insufficient food, and a lack of access to health care and to education.
  • Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion, as well as the lack of participation in decision-making.
