  • Which acid is used for hydrolysis of polysaccharides?

Conventionally, mineral acids (5,6) and enzymes (7) are used for the hydrolysis of polysaccharides. However, mineral acids entail difficulties of product separation, the necessity of waste effluent treatment, reactor corrosion, and the further degradation of monosaccharide.

  • What happens if a polysaccharide is hydrolyzed?

Polysaccharides are very long and have many glycosidic bonds to hydrolyze. They cannot all be hydrolyzed at the same time, so the product is a mixture of dextrin, maltose, and glucose. If a polysaccharide sample is hydrolyzed completely (which means that it must react for a while), the product is glucose.

  • What are the three most abundant polysaccharides?

The three most abundant polysaccharides are starch, glycogen, and cellulose. These three are referred to as homopolymers because each yields only one type of monosaccharide (glucose) after complete hydrolysis. Heteropolymers may contain sugar acids, amino sugars, or noncarbohydrate substances in addition to monosaccharides.

  • Which catalyst is used for hydrolysis of oligosaccharides?

The respective catalytic activities of AC-SO 3 H and Amberlyst 70 catalysts were investigated for the hydrolysis of oligosaccharides such as maltose, maltotriose, maltotetraose, maltopentaose, and polysaccharides such as starch with an average DP of 30. The low molecular weight starch was soluble in water.
