density column lab pdf
Five-Layer Density Column
A density column consists of layers of liquids of different densities which do not mix with each other and which are clearly distinguishable from each other The highest density material is at the bottom of the column and as you proceed up the column the density of each successive layer decreases with the lowest density layer on top |
Density Column Lab
Objective: Demonstrate an understanding of density by calculating the density of five liquids Then create a density column where the least dense liquid is on top and the most dense liquid is on the bottom LIQUIDS: Alcohol Cooking Oil Dish Soap Syrup Water INITIAL PREDICTION - Examine the list of liquids (5) above |
What is a 5 layer density column?
Five-Layer Density Column density column consists of layers of liquids of different densities which do not mix with each other, and which are clearly distinguishable from each other.
What is a density column?
A density column containing some common liquids and solids. From top: baby oil, rubbing alcohol (colored red), vegetable oil, wax, water (colored blue) and aluminum.
How do you do a density analysis?
Divide the class into groups of five students each. Hand out the lab worksheets and have students document their density predictions. Measure the mass of each item to obtain the average mass for each component of the density column. Begin with one of the four items.
How long does a density column last?
A well-constructed density column can maintain its layers for several hours or days. The first layer you pour stays at the bottom of the glass because it has the highest density or amount of mass per unit volume. The last layer you pour has the lowest density. Some liquids, like oil and water, don’t mix because they repel each other.
