density of seawater formula
How do you calculate the density of a material?
The density of a material is given in units of mass per unit volume and expressed in kilograms per cubic metre in the SI system of units. In oceanography the density of seawater has been expressed historically in grams per cubic centimetre. The density of seawater is a function of temperature, salinity, and pressure.
What is the density of fresh water?
Density refers to the amount of mass per unit volume, such as grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm 3 ). The density of fresh water is 1 g/cm 3 at 4 o C (see section 5.1 ), but the addition of salts and other dissolved substances increases surface seawater density to between 1.02 and 1.03 g/cm 3.
What is the density of seawater?
The density of surface seawater ranges from about 1020 to 1029 kg/m 3, depending on the temperature and salinity. At a temperature of 25 °C, the salinity of 35 g/kg and 1 atm pressure, the density of seawater is 1023.6 kg/m 3. Deep in the ocean, under high pressure, seawater can reach a density of 1050 kg/m 3 or higher.
What is the thermodynamic equation of seawater?
This new standard is called the Thermodynamic Equation of Seawater (2010), or TEOS-10. In turn, standards like EOS-80 or TEOS-10 rely on other international standards that precisely define the state variables of temperature and salinity. Standards thus play an important role in ocean science. Table 1.
