density tower experiment
How do you make a layered tower based on density?
All you need is a large jar, and several different liquids. Investigate whether the liquids mix together, or form a layered tower based on how dense each liquid is. First, what is density? Density refers to the mass of a substance (the amount of matter in that substance) compared to its volume (how much space a substance takes up).
What is a density tower?
Density towers are a simple and fun experiment you can do at home to demonstrate the density of liquids. Substances that are more dense create the base of the tower, while substances that are less dense seem to float in the middle and on top. You can experiment with using lots of colors to make your tower a true work of scientific art!
What happens if you add liquids to a density tower?
When all the liquids and small objects have been added to your density tower, you will have what appears to be a “magic” column but it’s all based on science. All of the liquids will be clearly distinguishable from each other and each of the objects will have settled at different levels within the column.
Can you make a density column with many liquid layers?
You can make a density column—also known as a density tower—with many liquid layers using common household liquids. This is an easy, fun and colorful science project that illustrates the concept of density. You can use some or all of these liquids, depending on how many layers you want and which materials you have handy.
