Is 5 dextrose in normal saline hypertonic?
Isotonic solutions that contain 5% dextrose (e.g., D5NSS, D5LRS) are slightly hypertonic since they exceed the total osmolality of the ECF.
However, dextrose is quickly metabolized and only the isotonic solution remains.
Therefore, any effect on the ICF is temporary.
Why is dextrose added to normal saline?
Rapid infusion of a hypo-osmolar solution can cause osmotically induced water shift into the cells, and this can lead to detrimental effects such as hemolysis.
Addition of 5% dextrose ensures that the infused solution will have an osmolality equal to or higher than plasma regardless of the salt concentration.
What is 5% dextrose saline used for?
Dextrose 5% in water is used to treat low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), insulin shock, or dehydration (fluid loss).
Dextrose 5% in water is also given for nutritional support to patients who are unable to eat because of illness, injury, or other medical condition.26 juil. 2023
