fire ants in texas

  • Are fire ants everywhere in Texas?

The red imported fire ant is primarily found in the subtropical southern states in the United States. In Texas, fire ants prefer to construct their mounds in open and bright regions and live in colonies. Fire ants create mound-shaped nests by burrowing into the ground.
  • What kind of fire ants are in Texas?

    Imported Red Fire Ants
Several are considered common lawn pests, but only one is considered a serious nuisance to humans-the Imported Red Fire Ant. Introduced in the 1930's, this ant has spread to infest 9 southeastern states including Texas.
  • Why are fire ants bad in Texas?

They can even be dangerous to the young of larger animals, like deer and cattle, which are particularly vulnerable as infants. Beyond the damage done to Texas' wildlife, imported fire ants have a significant negative economic impact, too.
  • One way to distinguish fire ants from other red ants is that they have a 2-segmented pedicel, which looks like two bumps on the 'waist' of the ant—the area between the thorax and abdomen. Their thorax lacks spines, and they also have 10 distinct antennal segments with a 2-segmented club at the ends.
