How do you find the difference of squares?
Difference of squares problems can be checked by multiplying out the result or expanding the product to a single polynomial. Check the work by multiplying ( 3 x + 2) ( 3 x − 2) out using FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last) to arrive back at the original binomial. Thus 9 x 2 − 4 factors to ( 3 x + 2) ( 3 x − 2).
What is a difference of squares?
A difference of squares is identified as a binomial with perfect square terms that are subtracted from each other. A perfect square term is a term that can be rewritten as an expression multiplied by itself. For example, 9 x 2 can be rewritten as 3 x ∗ 3 x or ( 3 x) 2. This is a perfect square term.
