There are three main varieties of digital currency: cryptocurrency, stablecoins and central bank digital currency, known as CBDCs. Blockchain technology, which provides the foundation for cryptocurrency, is the most common form of distributed ledger used by digital currencies.
What is digital money?
Digital money generally represents fiat currencies, such as dollars or euros. It is exchanged using computers, smartphones, cards, and online cryptocurrency exchanges. In some cases, it can be converted into physical cash using an ATM. Digital money is money in purely digital form. It is not a tangible asset like cash or commodities.
What are the benefits of using digital currency?
Faster payments. Using digital currency, you can complete payments much faster than current means, like ACH or wire transfers, which can take days for financial institutions to confirm a transaction. Cheaper international transfers. International currency transactions are very expensive.

A central bank digital currency is a digital currency that is issued and overseen by a country’s central bank. Think of it like Bitcoin, but if Bitcoin were managed by the Federal Reserve and had the full backing of the U.S. government.
