How do you name organic compounds A level chemistry?
In order to name organic compounds you must first memorize a few basic names.
These names are listed within the discussion of naming alkanes.
In general, the base part of the name reflects the number of carbons in what you have assigned to be the parent chain. What are the rules for naming organic compounds?
The carbon atoms have been numbered to help you to name the compound.
1Identify the functional group.
2) Find the longest carbon chain.
3) Number the carbon atoms in the longest chain.
4) Look for any branched group, name them and give their position on the carbon chain.
5) Combine the elements of the name into a single word.
