What does Rgdal do?
The rgdal package provides bindings to the Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL) and access to projection and transformation operations from the PROJ library.
This software is the workhorse for many spatial software applications and many spatial data analysis packages build upon it.
Will RGDAL be retired during 2023?
Roger currently maintains rgdal , rgdal and maptools but will stop maintaining these packages by October 2023.
Solutions for package developers
In general, there are two main alternative options⁸: sf package, which is a modern alternative to rgdal and rgeos, and also provides a spatial vector data representation in R. terra package, which gives support to working with spatial vector and raster data in R.
