Can a school exit a student with dyslexia?
A school may only exit a student from special education after following all applicable procedures. When an ARD committee determines a student with dyslexia no longer requires an evidence-based dyslexia program, it might determine that the student still would benefit from regular education aids and services (e.g., instructional accommodations).
Is dyslexia a type of SLD?
And IDEA lists dyslexia as a type of SLD. IDEA is a national law. States can implement it in different ways. State laws do have to give students all the rights and protections that federal laws do. They can’t give less protection. But they can provide more. But IDEA isn’t always specific about everything. It doesn’t define dyslexia.
Do all states have dyslexia laws?
The laws can use it to outline specific ways for schools to evaluate, identify and teach students with dyslexia. Not all states have dyslexia laws. To learn if your state does, contact your school or your state’s department of education. In the states that do have dyslexia laws, parents have often spearheaded the efforts to pass those laws.
Do students with dyslexia get special services?
“More than 90% of students with disabilities attend traditional public schools, and those students are entitled to special services,” Flink says. There’s no single test that confirms a diagnosis of dyslexia. Rather, a series of reading tests, along with observations from parents and teachers, are considered.
