How does Eisenmenger syndrome affect the heart?
Eisenmenger syndrome causes the heart walls to get bigger and thicker. It also causes oxygen levels to lower. These changes may cause irregular heart rhythms. Some arrhythmias increase the risk of blood clots that can cause heart attacks or strokes. Sudden cardiac arrest. This is the sudden loss of heart activity due to an irregular heart rhythm.
Why is it called Eisenmenger's disease?
It’s named for Dr. Victor Eisenmenger, who first identified the condition in 1897. Your heart has four chambers -- a left and right atrium and a left and right ventricle. As your heart beats, blood travels from the body into the right atrium, which sends it to the right ventricle.
