epigraph attribution
What is an epigraph in a book?
An epigraph is a short phrase or quotation at the start of a book. Typically, authors use a single epigraph at the very beginning of a book, but some add one at the start of each chapter or section as well. You can use an epigraph to foreshadow the tone, theme or plot of a book.
How do you start a book with an epigraph?
An epigraph is a good way of setting the tone of a book. For example, Mario Puzo’s The Godfather begins with a short quotation: Behind every great fortune there is a crime. – Balzac The attribution of this quote is a little debatable.
Why is This quote an epigram?
This quote (from an essay by the 18th century English writer Charles Lamb) is an epigram because it is a brief, witty, and satirical statement which, even without the original context, makes sense all on its own.
How do you cite an epigraph?
It’s often from a famous source, but it doesn’t have to be. The source of an epigraph is usually given on a line following the quotation, sometimes preceded by a dash. Only the author’s name and, usually, the title of the work need appear; it is not customary to give a full citation (but see 14.52 ).
