  • What is the history of the French language in Québec?

Before 1763, most of Québec was part of New France and as a result the common language was French. The French colonists who came to New France were generally from the north (Brittany, Normandy, Ile-de-France) so the language was influenced by the dialects from these regions.
  • When did French become official language of Québec?

The Quebec National Assembly adopted the Official Language Act (Bill 22) in July 1974. It made French the official language in Quebec, while granting anglophones the rights they had historically enjoyed. Bill 22 sought to integrate allophones into francophone culture by teaching them French.
  • What brought the French to Québec?

They came in hopes of gaining some social mobility or sheltering themselves from religious persecution by a republican and secular France. For the most part, they settled in Montreal and Quebec City. Among them was Pierre Guerout, a Huguenot who in 1792 was elected to the first Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada.
  • Québécois French is based on the French spoken in Paris during the 17th and 18th centuries because during that time Europeans were colonizing the Americas and French royals sent Parisians to live in “la Nouvelle France” (aka New France which is modern-day Québec).
