Can trifluoroacetyl groups be hydrolyzed?

    The ease with which trifluoroacetyl groups can be hydrolyzed has led to their use as blocking agents in syntheses of carbohydrates, steroids, and polypeptides. The readiness with which trifluoroacetyl derivatives undergo hydrolysis was first reported by Swarts in his original work on trifluoroacetic acid (192).

Why is trifluoroacetic acid used in HPLC?

    At a low concentration, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is used as an ion pairing agent in liquid chromatography (HPLC) of organic compounds, particularly peptides and small proteins. TFA is a versatile solvent for NMR spectroscopy (for materials stable in acid). It is also used as a calibrant in mass spectrometry.

What is hydrolysis of polysaccharides?

    In the case of polysaccharides, hydrolysis results in smaller polysaccharides or disaccharides, or monosaccharides. In the living system, hydrolysis of polysaccharides occurs in the presence of a group of enzymes termed hydrolases that catalyze the hydrolysis process.

How does trifluoroacetic acid react with active hydrogen?

    Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) reacts with active hydrogen (HZ, such as hydroxy and amino groups): When using TFA, water is the coproduct, which works well in aqueous systems or systems tolerant of water. The reactions of TFA are centered around the carbonyl group.
