hypotonic solution cell

When a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution?

When plant cells are placed in a hypotonic solution, such as distilled water, water rushes into the cell and fills the vacuole. The cell expands, but does not burst due to the cell wall, which maintains the integrity of the cell. This is also why grocers spray produce with distilled water.

What happens to cells placed in hypotonic solution?

Water molecules will enter the cell if it is put in a hypotonic solution, causing it to enlarge and explode. Plant cells (bottom panel) are plasmolyzed in a hypertonic solution but thrive in a hypotonic environment. Animal cells (top panel) are only damaged by being put in a very high concentration of sugar.

How does a hypertonic solution affect a cell?

Thus, in a hypertonic solution, water leaves the cell and moves to the environment. This causes the cell to shrivel. For example, when we are severely dehydrated our red blood cells can be in a hypertonic environment. This causes the cells to shrivel and can even lead to cell death. In a hypertonic solution, cells lose water and shrink.

What will happen to a cell in a hypertonic solution?

Therefore, a hypertonic solution has more solutes than the intracellular environment, so water will leave the cell to try to achieve equilibrium. If enough water is lost, the cell will take on a wrinkled or shriveled appearance. In red blood cells this is called crenation and the surface of the cells take on a scalloped appearance.
