What is caste system?

The caste system or Varna is a purely Indian fact and the practice is practiced especially by Hindus, for a period of time, even since it is considered India, to cling to other religions such as Islam, Sikh, Christian, etc.

Why did Hinduism create an oppressive caste system?

The religious leaders of Hinduism created the oppressive caste system as an essential component of the religion. It does not allow for upward mobility in society. If a person’s family comes from the lower economic strata, in a society based on a caste system, that person would need to remain within that restricted level.

How do Indologists view caste?

The indologists have viewed caste from the scriptural point of view, social anthropologists from the cultural point of view, and sociologists from the social stratifica­tion point of view. The indological perspective takes its cue from the scriptures about the origin, purpose and future of the caste system.

What are the four sociological approaches to caste?

There are four sociological approaches to caste by distinguishing between the two levels of theoretical formulation, i.e., cultural and structural, and universalistic and particularistic. These four approaches are cultural-universalistic, cultural-particularistic, structural- universalistic and structural-particularistic.
