What is the history of Karen culture?
The Karen come from the country of Myanmar formerly known as Burma. The Karen are an ethnic group who have resided in Burma for over two thousand years and were one of the first inhabitants of the region. Many of the Karen have fled Burma due to religious and ethnic persecution by the government.
What is the traditional Karen culture?
Traditionally, most Karen people are farmers who cultivate “hill rice”. They live in villages that are small clearings in the forest. Houses are made entirely of bamboo and thatch. A nearby stream or river may provide a place for villagers to bathe, do washing, and collect drinking water.
What is the history of Karen clothing?
Back in refugee camps, women often weaved in order to make money to buy food and school supplies for their children. They made woven scarves, shirts and bags. Weaving is an art the Karen value and teach to their children and the generations after.
The language of the Karens is generally considered to be of the Tibeto-Burman family, and the main dialects of Karen are Pwo and Sgaw. Many Karen people in isolated hill areas remain illiterate, and those in the Delta region often can speak only Burmese.
