VARIABLES QUANTITATIVES CONTINUES
Continuous Variables

4 Continuous Random Variables and Probability Distributions
A random variable X is continuous if possible values comprise either a single interval on the number line or a union of disjoint intervals Example: If in the study of the ecology of a lake X the r v may be depth measurements at randomly chosen locations Then X is a continuous r v |
Types of variables
categorical regular continuous discrete categorical ordinal Learning objective(s): Identify variables as numerical and categorical If variable is numerical further classify as continuous or discrete based on whether or not the variable can take on an infinite number of values or only whole numbers respectively |
Variables and their measurement
A variable is a condition or quality that can differ from one case to another The opposite notion to a variable is a constant which is simply a condition or quality that does not vary between cases The number of cents in a United States dollar is a constant: every dollar note will always exchange for 100 cents Most research however is |

Is random variable x a continuous variable?
A random variable X is continuous if possible values comprise either a single interval on the number line or a union of disjoint intervals. Example: If in the study of the ecology of a lake, X, the r.v. may be depth measurements at randomly chosen locations. Then X is a continuous r.v.
What are qualitative variables?
Qualitative variables are non-numeric variables that describe an observation (not a measure) allocating it in several predetermined descriptive categories. Qualitative data are further divided into nominal and ordinal data. Ordinal data are divided into categories that could be ordered following some scale.
What is an example of a continuous variable?
An example is the injury severity score (ISS) in trauma patients, which could assume only an integer value between 0 and 75. Continuous variables are data, derived from direct measurements, that can assume infinite values and may include decimals. Examples include weight and blood loss during surgery.
Why do researchers design a quantitative study?
In summary, investigators design many of their quantitative studies to test hypotheses about the relationships between variables. Understanding the nature of the variables involved helps in understanding and evaluating the research conducted.
Understanding Quantitative Variables
The root of the word variable is related to the word “vary,” which should help us understand what variables might be. Variables are elements, entities, or factors that can change (vary); for example, the outdoor temperature, the cost of gasoline per gallon, a person’s weight, and the mood of persons in your extended family are all variables. In oth
Types of Quantitative Variables
There are other meaningful ways to think about variables of interest, as well. Let’s consider different features of variables used in quantitative research studies. Here we explore quantitative variables as being categorical, ordinal, or interval in nature. These features have implications for both measurement and data analysis. Categorical Variabl
