What is the New York State Court of Appeals?

    The New York State Court of Appeals is the highest court in the state and it hears both civil and criminal cases. In civil cases, the appeals are taken from decisions of the Appellate divisions whereas in criminal cases, the appeals can be taken from decisions of the Appellate division, the County Court America and the Appellate Term.

    Pace Law Library has records and briefs for the New York Court of Appeals on microfiche beginning with 1956. HeinOnline has N.Y. Court of Appeals briefs beginning with 96 N.Y.2d (cases decided in 2001) Court-PASS provides access to records and briefs for NY Court of Appeals cases pending on or filed after Jan. 1, 2013.
