What is Nyquist sampling theorem?

    Understanding the Nyquist sampling theorem is important in dealing with timeseries analysis. It also provides insight into the limitations of your temporaldata set. It is important when you need to determine a continuous functionfrom a discrete measurements.

What was Nyquist's theory?

    Years prior, Nyquist had done purely theoretical work on determining bandwidth requirements for transmitting information. He determined that the number of pulses that could be put through a telegraph channel was limited to twice the bandwidth of the channel. (We'll explain that more in a second.)

What is the Nyquist formula?

    Solution We can use the Nyquist formula as shown: 265,000 =2 X 20,000 X logz L log2 L = 6.625 L =2 6.625 = 98.7 levels Since this result is not a power of 2, we need to either increase the number of levels or reduce the bit rate. If we have 128 levels, the bit rate is 280 kbps. If we have 64 levels, the bit rate is 240 kbps.

What happens if the Nyquist criterion is not met?

    If the Nyquist criterion is not met, aliasing will occur. Say, for example, if the maximum frequency of a sine wave is 70 MHz, then the minimum sampling frequency required is 140 MSPS, as per Nyquist criteria.
