phagocytosed particle

What is the phagocytosis of a particle?

Figure 2-11 A, Phagocytosis of a particle (e.g., bacterium) involves attachment and binding of Fc and C3b to receptors on the leukocyte membrane, engulfment, and fusion of lysosomes with phagocytic vacuoles, followed by destruction of ingested particles within the phagolysosomes.

How is phagocytosis measured?

Phagocytosis, attachment and internalization were measured by flow cytometry and time-lapse video microscopy. Particles possessing diameters of 2–3 ?m exhibited maximal phagocytosis and attachment. Rate of internalization, however, was not affected significantly by particle size.

What are the phases of phagocytosis?

The process of phagocytosis involves several phases: i) detection of the particle to be ingested, ii) activation of the internalization process, iii) formation of a specialized vacuole called phagosome, and iv) maturation of the phagosome to transform it into a phagolysosome.

What happens when a particle is recognized by phagocytic receptors?

When a particle is recognized by phagocytic receptors, various signaling pathways are activated to initiate phagocytosis. Reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton and changes in the membrane take place resulting in a depression of the membrane area touching the particle, the phagocytic cup.
