What is Java programming?
IN THIS SECTION, OUR PLAN ISto lead you into the world of Java programming by tak- ing you through the basic steps required to get a simple program running. The Java system is a collection of applications, not unlike many of the other applications that you are accustomed to using (such as your word processor, email program, and internet browser).
Why do we use Java?
We use Java because it is widely available, embraces a full set of modern abstractions, and has a variety of automatic checks for mistakes in programs, so it is suitable for learning to pro- gram. There is no perfect language, and you certainly will be programming in other languages in the future.
What can you do with Java methods?
In this chapter, you have already used some of Java’s methods for printing, for converting data from one type to another, and for computing mathematical functions (the Java Mathli- brary). In later chapters, you will learn not just how to use other methods, but how to create and use your own methods.
