HHD works year-round to ensure that HHD staff members, community partners, and Houston residents are prepared to respond to disaster situations. The Houston Health Department conducts regular emergency response training so that employees are ready to respond in disasters such as hurricanes.

The quality of one’s environment can have a major effect on health. HHD monitors health risks in the Houston environment, including outdoor air quality, surface and ground water quality, toxic substances and hazardous wastes, indoor air pollution and other indoor hazards such as lead contamination, food safety, and swimming pool sanitation.
