R is ‘GGNU S’, a freely available language and environment for statistical computing and graphics which provides a wide variety of statistical and graphical techniques: linear and nonlinear modelling, statistical tests, time series analysis, classification, clustering, etc.
Where did the introduction to R come from?
This introduction to R is derived from an original set of notes describing the S andS-Plusenvironments written in 1990–2 by Bill Venables and David M. Smith when at the Universityof Adelaide. We have made a number of small changes to reflect differences between the R and S programs, and expanded some of the material.
How to build R using gnureadline?
It is possible to build R using an emulation of GNUreadline, such as one based on NetBSD’s editline(alsoknown as libedit), in which case only a subset of the capabilities may be provided. On a PC keyboard this is usually the Alt key, occasionally the ‘Windows’ key. On a Mac keyboard normallyno meta key is available.
