What is the UK's new immigration system?
In January 2021 the UK’s new immigration system came into force, the main features of which are the end of free movement for new EU nationals coming to the UK and changes to the criteria for work visas (sometimes referred to as a ‘points-based system’).
What are UK immigration targets?
During some periods, specific numerical targets in immigration policy have been in place, however. In particular, the Conservative-led UK governments from 2010 to 2019 had explicit targets to reduce net migration – immigration minus emigration – to under 100,000 a year.
How many migrants are there in the UK?
From March 2019 to March 2020 (at the time of writing, the most recent period for which there were data), the United Kingdom received 708,000 migrants. Accounting for non-UK citizens who left the country, immigration increased the country’s population by 347,000 over this period.
