When does periodic breathing stop

Your baby may have periodic breathing when he or she is sleeping. It happens less often as your infant grows. The condition should stop by the time your baby is 6 months old.

How do you stop periodic breathing?

A baby with periodic breathing will always restart regular breathing on his or her own. No intervention is needed. Although this can be alarming to parents, it is a harmless condition. It will go away as your baby gets older.

Do all babies have periodic breathing?

It usually occurs when the infant is sleeping deeply, but may occur with light sleep or even when awake. Studies have shown that 78% of healthy full-term infants experience episodes of periodic breathing in the first two weeks of life, which typically resolves in the first six months of life.

When does periodic breathing normally occur?

PB as a percentage of total sleep time ranges from 8% to 15% in preterm, and 0% to 5% in term infants. PB that is markedly elevated during infancy, or present in older children, may require further investigation, such as central nervous system imaging. PB occurs during both REM and NREM sleep.
