WHAT IS IMLI? The IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) is a centre of education and training in international maritime law. It was established in 1988 under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialised agency of the United Nations.

The mission of the IMO International Maritime Law Institute is to enhance capacity-building in all States, particularly developing States, to contribute to the fulfilment of the IMO objectives thereby promoting safe, secure, environmentally sound, efficient and sustainable shipping through cooperation.

The main purpose of the programme is to train legal advisers in relevant areas of international maritime law, including the law of the sea, marine environmental law, maritime security law, and shipping law.
