Activity Directions
Preparation:
1.Print out the context clues labels. Cut them apart. Tape them onto cups.
2.Print out the sentence strips on cardstock. Cut them apart.
Lesson Procedure:
1.Show students the 5 labeled cups. Explain
that the labels display five types of context clues that we are going to focus on today. Review the types of context clues.
2.Distribute white boards, dry-erase markers, and erasers to each student.
3.Tell students that you are going to place a sentence strip beneath the
meaning of the underlined word in the sentence. They should write a simple definition on their white board, along with a number to show which type of 4.
Read the first sentence strip. After every student has had an opportunity to write a definition and number on their white board, tell students to turn to
a partner and compare their answers.
5.Choose someone who answered correctly to explain their answer to the
class. 6.Place the sentence strip in the appropriate cup.
7.Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 with the remaining sentence strips.

1.Cut along the dotted lines.
2.Open your notebook to your next blank page spread. Glue the top
section in the middle of your notebook, as shown.
3.Glue the #1 and #2 magnifying glasses along the left edge of your
notebook, below the title.
4.Glue the other strip of magnifying glasses (#3, #4, and #5) along the
left edge of your notebook on the opposite page.
5.Choose a challenging vocabulary word. (The student who completed
