ROMAN NUMERALS

YThe seven basic symbols are used to represent

Roman numerals

RULES TO REPRESENT ROMAN

NUMERALS

YRule1:

YIf a symbol is repeated, then its value is adeed as many times as it occurs

YA symbol can be repeated only three times

YV,L and D are never repeated

YEg: II =1+1=2

YXXX = 10+10+10=30

YVV = WRONG

RULES

Rule 2:

YIf a smaller number is written to the left of bigger number then it has to be subtracted from bugger number

YI can be subtracted from V and X

YX can be subtracted from L and C

YC can be subtracted from D and M

YV,L and D are never subtracted

YEg: IV = 5-1=4

YXL = 50-10=40

YCD= 500-100=400

YVX=WRONG

RULES

Rule 3:

YIf a smaller number is written to the right of a bigger number then it has to be added to the bigger number

YEg: XV=10+5=15

YLV=50+5=55

YCL= 100+50=150

RULES

Rule 4:

YSmaller number is written between two greater

values then it is always subtracted from the greater number following it

YEg: XXXIV=10+10+10+(5-1)

Y30+4=34

YMCIX = 1000+100+(10-1)

Y1100+9=1109

CONVERTING HINDU ARABIC TO

ASSIGNMENT

Answer the below questions (To be Displayed in a Document to students) (HOTS)

1) Why is it important to learn latitudes and longitudes?

2) In order to locate a place, we need to know its latitude and longitude.

Suppose the latitude of a given place is 70degrees.Can you find its location? Support your answer with justification Students who do not understand will be called for remedial. Notes will be provided in the form of points. Special Assignments will be provided.

1. Equator: The imaginary 0 degrees latitude that divides the Earth into 2 halves as

northern and southern hemispheres.

Northern

hemisphere

Southern

hemisphere

2. Prime Meridian: It is the 0 degrees longitude which passes through Greenwich.

3. Grid: A network of parallels and meridians which cross each other at right

angles.

1. Name some important parallels of Latitude

A. Important parallels of Latitude are:

o Arctic Circle: 66 ½ degrees N o Tropic of Cancer: 23 ½ degrees N o Equator: 0 degrees o Tropic of Capricorn: 23 ½ degrees S o Antarctic Circle: 66 ½ degrees S

2. What is a hemisphere of the earth?

A. Any Circle drawn around the Earth which divides into 2 halves is called hemisphere. There are generally considered to be four hemispheres o Northern hemisphere o Southern hemisphere o Eastern hemisphere o Western hemisphere

3. Differentiate between parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude.

Parallels of latitude Meridians of longitude

The imaginary lines running from

East to West.

The imaginary lines running from

North to South.

Lines of latitude are called

Parallels.

Lines of longitude are called

Meridians.

They are used for calculating the

distance.

They are used for Calculating

local time of places.

The lines get shorter towards the

poles.

The lines have same length.

Total number of lines:181 Total number of lines:360

Latitudes are parallel lines they

never meet

Longitudes meet at the poles

4. How will we find the location of a place if we know the latitudes and

longitudes of a place? A. We can find the location of a place with the latitudes and longitudes by seeing where these two intersect each other.

5. Why is it important to learn Latitudes and Longitudes?

A. Lines of latitude and longitude have a very important role. The particular location of any place on the Earth can only be traced precisely with the help of latitude and longitude of the place.

1. The meridian of longitude that divides the earth into two equal

halves ___________.

2. The line of latitude at 90 degrees North _____________.

3. The half of the Earth located on the north of the equator ________.

4. Latitudes and longitudes are measured in ___________.

5. The line of 0 degrees longitude is ______________.

The below picture will be displayed and students will be asked questions.

1. Find out the locations of 5 main metropolitan cities of India in

terms of latitudes and longitudes. [Hint : Use Atlas for help]
