What it Means for Families

No Smoking at Schools & Child Care

No Smoking in Vehicles with Children

Act 135 prohibits use of all tobacco products

including tobacco substitutes (such as e-cigarettes) on public school grounds, at school sponsored events, and licensed child care facilities (indoor and outdoor) at all times, even when children are not

there.Act 135 allows law enforcement to pull over any car when someone in the car is seen smoking and a child 8 years old or younger is in the car.

You can be ?ned up to $100.

This law is important for children because there is no safe amount of secondhand smoke. Act 135 went into e?ect on July 1, 2014. For full details: www.healthvermont.gov/prevent/tobacco Created by the Mt. Ascutney Prevention Partnership and the Vermont Department of Health

Even in short rides with windows rolled down,

secondhand smoke can reach dangerously high levels.

Children who are around secondhand smoke are at

more risk for Sudden Unexpected Infant Death, lung infections, ear infections, pneumonia, bronchitis and other medical problems. Tobacco use and substitutes are no longer allowed at in-home day care centers while children are there. Parents must be noti?ed if there is smoking in the home at other times.
