[PDF] Forest Glen Middle School - Elective Choices - Broward County 195_1CourseDescription19_20.pdf Forest Glen Middle School - Elective Choices Advanced IT Honors (8th Grade Only) (High School Credit Class) Advance IT is an introductory computer science course that empowers students to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun. Students will learn to use HTML and CSS to design their own web pages, explore programming concepts through the development of animations and games, and explore the relationship between hardware and software, while building interactive projects. This course is a high-school credit course.

Art 1 (All Grades)

Students are introduced to the rigor and routine of the art production process including: planning, producing, and reflecting on art. With an emphasis on studio arts, students explore a wide range of 2D media, skills and techniques. Projects may include but not be limited to: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, and sculpture. Students develop technical skills, foster their expressive abilities and employ the use of the elements of art throughout the production process.

Art 2 (7th and 8th Grade Only)

Students break away from the introductory elements of Art 1 and create personal works using

2D and 3D media and previously acquired skills and techniques; while engaging in the art

production process within a studio arts environment. Projects may include but are not limited to: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, and sculpture. Students communicate artistic ideas through the intentional use of the elements of art within their work. Students interpret meaning in their artwork and the artwork of others through discussion, on various artistic concepts, viewpoints, and theme. Band 1 (All Grades) The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop fundamental skills on wind or percussion instruments through the refinement and performance of middle/junior high band literature. The content should include: -technical skills -individual and ensemble techniques - music literacy -elements and characteristics of music -improvisation, composition, and arranging -performance analysis -role and influence of instrumental music and musicians -connections between music and other subject areas - instrument care and maintenance -responsible participation in music activities. This course generally requires students to participate in extra rehearsals and performances beyond the school day. Additional costs may be assessed for various enrichment activities.

Band 2 and 3 (All Grades)

The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop basic skills on wind or percussion instruments through the refinement and performance of middle/junior high band literature. The content should include: -technical skills -individual and ensemble techniques music literacy -elements and characteristics of music -improvisation, composition, and arranging -performance analysis -role and influence of instrumental music and musicians -connections between music and other subject areas - instrument care and maintenance -responsible participation in music activities. The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop fundamental vocal musicianship, technical skills, and aesthetic awareness through the study and performance of varied middle/junior high choral literature. The content should include: vocal production -choral performance techniques; music literacy; elements and characteristics of music improvisation, composition, and arranging -performance analysis; role and influence of choral music and musicians; connections between music and other subject areas; responsible participation in music activities. This course generally requires students to participate in extra rehearsals and performances beyond the school day. Forensic science is the application of science for solving crimes. In this class, students will learn

many of the techniques forensic scientists use. Through the use of hands-on activities, laboratory investigations and on-line simulations, students will learn how forensic scientists use fingerprints, hair, DNA, bones, and more to solve crimes. As Forensic Science involves many different fields of science, a students understanding of Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and Physics will be strengthened as well. French 1 and French 2 (7th and 8th Grade Only) (High School Credit Class) Forest Glen is one of the few middle schools to offer French I and French II at the middle school level. Students will take French I and have the opportunity to take French II (the following year) through Florida Virtual School (FLVS) with a facilitator who is able to assist with the online class. Completing the course will satisfy both the Foreign Language and online course requirements needed to graduate high school. Students should have a strong Language Arts background and a desire to learn a new language and culture. Fundamentals of Web & Software Development (7th and 8th Grades Only) Fundamental Web and Software Development is an introductory to computer science class where students learn to create computer programs that will help them learn to collaborate with others, develop problem-solving skills, and persist through difficult tasks. Students will study programming concepts, computational thinking, digital citizenship, and develop interactive games or stories they can share.

Journalism/Yearbook (All Grades)

Yearbook Journalism will teach you about all aspects of creating a written publication. You will investigate stories, capture photos, design pages, and market your product. Your goal is to produce a yearbook for you and your school. Join the team that puts your middle school memories into living color.

Latinos in Action (All Grades)

There is nothing better than to get to know other Latino students! A class where you could display the pride of your culture, help elementary students by tutoring every week, enjoy meeting students from other school, and learn leadership skills that will help for the rest of your life! A volunteer-center class that will make an impact to our community! Come join Latinos in Action! LEEO (Linking Education & Employment Opportunities) (All Grades) This program scaffolds computer instruction and employability skills to ensure students will become proficient in a specified technological area and acquire the skills necessary to compete in a global society. Students will receive Certification in if they complete the 3 courses. Students are able finish all 3 courses in middle school or continue on in select high schools. Medical Skills (8th Grade Only) (High School Credit Class) The Medical Skills class at Forest Glen Middle is a high school credit class. It is an excellent opportunity for students to experience some basic life-saving skills within rescue medicine. The class focuses on hands-on, practical-learning to gain experience with skills, like rescue breathing, CPR, and bandaging wounds. Students are engaged in class discussions and creative projects throughout the year pertaining to different medical maladies to gain a better understanding and appreciation for them. Students will have the opportunity to interact with medical professionals throughout the year and earn their CPR/AED certification.

Peer Counseling (All Grades)

Do you want to make the school a better place? Have fun while helping you peers? Hang out with Brutus the Therapy Dog? Learn about your emotions through funny stories and fun activities? Do you like to help your friends with their problems? Then Peer Counseling is the elective for you! Activities include: Chalk for Peace, Kindness Rocks, Character Playbook with Miami Dolphins, Peer Mediation Classes, Tobacco Prevention Program, Think b4U Post, and much more.

Physical Education (All Grades)

Physical education classes are fun and energetic participation classes. You will have the opportunity to learn and play many different games and activities throughout the year. In order Spanish 1 (7th and 8th Grades Only) (High School Credit Class) In Spanish 1, students will learn the foundations of the Spanish language and culture. Students learn basic vocabulary topics such as Personal Identification, Family, Food, Clothing, Travel, and more. Students will begin to construct basic sentences and conversations using present tense conjugations. In addition, students will begin to delve into the Spanish culture, learning about

Spanish customs and practices.

Spanish 2 (7th and 8th Grades Only) (High School Credit Class) Students are building upon the foundation of vocabulary and grammar they built in Spanish 1. In their second year, instruction will be focused on communicative skills; conversing with peers in the target language and working together to create culturally relevant projects. In addition, students will build upon their knowledge of the Spanish culture and begin drawing comparisons to their own. Speech and Debate (7th and 8th Grades Only) (High School Credit Class) The goal of Speech and Debate is to increase understanding of argument, critical thinking, and public speaking through a myriad of current event-related debate, speech, and interpretive activities. This course explores a wide variety and range of public speaking skills, including: Impromptu Speaking, Declamation, Original Oratory, and Text Interpretation. Additionally, students will be introduced to basic researching, argumentation, questioning, and rebuttal skills through a variety and range of debate disciplines, including: Congressional Debate, Public Forum Debate, and the basics of philosophy for Lincoln-Douglas Debate. All students will be encouraged to participate in district tournaments which take place monthly. Student Government Association Leadership Elective (All Grades) As a member of Student Government, you will be able to organize events to increase school spirit such as spirit weeks, raise awareness for health organizations, promote positive staff and student interactions, serve our community through volunteering activities such Harvest Drive and develop citizenship skills by working with our local city government in events such as MLK leadership day. As a student leader, you will have the opportunity to show and increase your skills through collaboration with other High school and Middle School student government associations across our county, district and state by attending conventions, workshops, and special events such as Wacky Olympics.
