Summer Issue2017s San Juan Animal League PO BOX 142. Farmington NM 87499 HOTLINE: 505 325-3366 gHow Did That Happen? We are a colony of cats and this is our story! There are ten of us kittens and our two mamas. The big nice man, Mike, and three boys (his boy and his two fiends) feed us, and play with us and keep us in two separate areas - some of us are living on the font porch of the house, and some of us in the big warehouse he built behind the house where he works on cars. One day, we heard him talking to someone caled the San Juan Animal League about how to he wanted to get us fixed, that he wanted to keep us, but didn't want any MORE. They wanted to know "How did that happen?" He told them he has a cousin that had a cat who had kittens. He came home with their Mama (now he cals her BabyMama) and her baby Gidget. Winter came, and he thought he'd get our mamas fixed in the spring, but then they disappeared for awhile. When they came home, we were al born right around Mother's Day in one of the cars. The lady he talked to told him that one unspayed female cat and her offspring in 7 years would produce 4,948 cats - so he signed us al up on their website for a Dogster's Spay/Neuter Clinic day and we got shots and everything (they offer a special low price for 5 or more kittens). We are home again and happy to have such good people taking care of us. Now there wil NOT be hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, milions or bilions or trilions of cats!#1 WISH Food for Emergencies Our Emergency Food Program has provided pet food on a short-term basis for the last 15 years. Over the years the program has helped hundreds of community members make it through a financial crisis without having to let a pet go hungry or surrender a pet to the regional shelter because of a temporary inability to provide adequate food. With the most recent downturn in our local economy, our Hotline is receiving more calls for temporary pet food assistance. We need your help and support to continue with this very important program. Cat food and dog food can be dropped off at Canine Castle (1903 E Mojave St, Farmington) with Melissa Salyers (on our Board) and Terri Williams (our long-time dedicated volunteer coordinator of this program) will dispense food to those in need. Thank you for your help. SKXASWe thank you for your donations!

I SanJuanAnimalLeague.Org2HOTLINE: 505 325-3366 hKathy Hogan President's MessageHere we are, half way through 2017 already! We have had a busy year so far and I am so grateful for the time and efforts of our Board and the many who volunteer their precious time to help the animals of San Juan County. So far this year we have had five very successful vaccine clinics. We saw 333 animals at the last clinic alone and because of the many volunteers who are there it has been smooth sailing! We have received many compliments from both the pet owners and volunteers. Kudos to Andrea and Sherrie Landon and the other Board Members for your commitment to this important part of our mission. The spay/neuter program has also been robust as we have serviced 260 animals so far this year. This number does not include the Dog Days of Summer special that began in July and has us booked until the end of August. We have been very grateful for the clinics that make this possible: Aztec Animal Shelter, Pawprints and Dogsters are dedicated to keeping unwanted pets out of our shelters.A big part of our success has been the revitalization of our Trap Neuter Return (TNR) program. Trudy Farrell along with new volunteer Christina Culver have dedicated their time to these kitties to make sure they get to our monthly Dogsters Cat Clinics. Additionally, Shayna Whitaker (Pawprints) has devoted much of her time to TNR in Bloomfield. The results are that we have given almost 100 cats a chance at a healthier life as of the end of June. - KathyClinics Our motivated trapper found 50 raccoons, 30 skunks, and only 3 feral cats, all lined up for feeding! To Be Continued...Aztec Vaccine Clinic July 4 643 vaccines given to 333 animals + 30 microchips Remaining 2017 Vaccination Clinics Oct 8, 12-3pm - Bloomfield Multicultural Center Nov 12, 12-4pm - McGee Park Fairgrounds, Bldg. #15 Spay/Neuter Clinics • Feral Cat SpecialAnyone may bring in a feral cat. Did You Know? I didn't. I had no idea that onion and garlic were toxic for cats and dogs. Onions (garlic) contain an ingredient called thiosulphate which is toxic to cats and dogs. The ingestion of onions causes a condition called hemolytic anemia, which is characterized by damage to the red blood cells. I also had not thought about the seasonings used on the savory rotisserie chicken skid at the local grocery. READ YOUR LABELS!!! All the schedules and easy on-line pay buttons for vaccination and spay/neuter clinics, info on pet emergency assistance, how to volunteer, how to become a member, how to donate or be a sponsor, etc. SanJuanAnimalLeague.ORG Thank you San Juan County We are grateful for all who sponsor and support our mission to help the animals of San Juan County. One in particular has furthered our cause in an extraordinary way - SAN JUAN COUNTY which has provided us with a building and the utilities to operate our Spay Neuter Clinics for four years. This support has saved SJAL thousands of dollars that have been spent on the animals instead. We are a fortunate group in that we have very little overhead and administrative costs and are able to put donations to work for our animals. We have no paid staff, just volunteers, and up until the end of this year we have had Building 15 to house our equipment and to operate our clinics from at no charge. Moving Forward Unfortunately, at the end of this year, the County will no longer be able to provide this donation because of updates at the location necessitating the removal of this building. We are so very grateful for the use of the building for these many years and look forward to continuing a great partnership with the County moving forward. Needed By Next Year, 2018 We are looking for a new location. We need about 1200 sq. ft. with electricity and water. Ideally, it would have a good sized parking area, where we could wash traps and carriers outside as well as have room for storage and operating the clinics from. If anyone knows of a possible location please contact us at 505-635-1836.
